I founded my company back in 1982. I was a young feminist. As with all new companies it had to have a name. Elfriede de Masars-Camarès was a countess of French Huguenot descent who lived in Germany in the early 1900’s. She was also my great-grandmother. She may have had a blue-blood title but she had no money to go with it. She did have, by all accounts, a big personality and a very strong will. She carried herself with style. To solve the money problem, she hustled — selling many things door-to-door to the women who ran the homes behind each door she knocked on. Among the products she sold were contraceptives. I named my firm in honor of her. And like Elfriede, we are innovative, persistent and unflinchingly honest.
